Why This Twin

Jan 01, 2024Jan 01, 2024

When it comes to twin-turbo muscle cars, the Mustang seems to have the edge over its heavier Mopar counterparts, which convinced this owner to swap.

RacerX on YouTube is a gearhead with experience in American muscle, and today he is back to share an interesting story. Through trial and error, he figured out that the Ford Mustang is simply the best when it comes to aftermarket upgrades and drag racing.

But the automotive YouTuber is a Mopar fan at heart, so when he decided to make the move to owning a Mustang it was after seeing the difference the pony can make compared to the heavy Dodge Challengers and Chargers.

Here’s what he reveals during the update, and what modern muscle cars could learn from Ford.

At some point in the video, RacerX comments that his twin-turbo Mustang is a ‘missile’. It should be. With a Hellion twin-turbo setup and some other upgrades, the car makes 900 wheel-horsepower.

It’s the second Mustang he owned for the channel since losing control of the first car in the rain and totaling it but saving the twin turbo kit. The reason he went from a 1000-hp Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in 2018 to this muscle car was after losing repeatedly to twin-turbo Mustangs.

Despite running 900 wheel-horsepower in his own Charger Hellcat, and the Charger being very fast at races, the Mustangs would always leave him in the dust. As RacerX reveals, the 600-lb weight benefit (and better aerodynamics) gained when switching to a Mustang drastically increased drag strip times. Now, he can make a 9:97 quarter mile pass at 152 mph in the Hellion Mustang.

With acceleration times confirming the difference, the YouTuber says that the Hellion twin-turbo Ford is faster than the heavier Dodge Hellcat, even with roughly the same power output.

Another reason for swapping a Mopar muscle car for the Mustang is the ubiquity of the Chargers and Challengers in media with twin turbo kits.

Following this era of the Hellion-powered Ford Mustang (which is currently up for sale), RacerX will be swapping gears once more and returning to Mopar: for a Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 but will also be acquiring an S650 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for good measure.

The S550 Ford Mustang GT is bowing out of service this year to get replaced by the all-new S650 Mustang. Previously starting at just under $40,000, the 2023 Mustang GT comes with last-generation’s 5-liter Coyote V8 and around 450 hp / 410 lb-ft. A twin-turbo kit from Hellion could add around $7,344 to the Mustang GT, raising the total price to nearly $50,000. Hellion calls it the ‘2018+ Ford Mustang GT Sleeper Hidden twin turbo system‘.
